About FAA and ATC Physicals

The FAA requires both pilots and air traffic controllers ATCs to undergo physical examinations by an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) to obtain medical certificates:

Pilots

To receive a FAA medical certificate, pilots must complete an application form using MedXpress, schedule an appointment with an AME and undergo a physical exam. The exam typically takes about 30 minutes and includes checks of eyesight, hearing, lung function and heart conditions. The AME will also conduct a urinalysis to check for sugar or protein, which could indicate diabetes or kidney disease. Pilots must also meet certain medical standards, such as not flying while sick and avoiding conditions that cause vertigo or disequilibrium.

Before Your Appointment

  • Fill out the MedXpress form and bring to appointment
  • Bring MedXpress confirmation code to the appointment

Air Traffic Control

Air Traffic Control Specialist applicants must undergo physicals to maintain their medical certification, which helps ensure air space safety. Applicants must have 20/20 distance and near vision in each eye, normal color vision and no hearing loss of more than 25 decibels at 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz. They must also have no history of heart disease and avoid drugs that affect their alertness, judgment, vision or equilibrium.
