Adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood (0-17 years). Examples of these events would be:

  • experiencing violence, abuse, or neglect
  • witnessing violence in the home or community
  • having a family member attempt or die by suicide

Also included are aspects of the child’s environment that can undermine their sense of safety, stability, and bonding such as growing up in a household with:

  • substance misuse
  • mental health problems
  • instability due to parental separation or household members being in jail or prison

ACEs are linked to chronic health problems, mental illness, and substance misuse in adulthood. ACEs can also negatively impact education and job opportunities. However, ACEs can be prevented.

Types of Therapy for Kids

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy or talk therapy is the broad term for the process of self discovery that moves individuals toward a path of healing through talking with a mental health professional. Psychotherapy will be a part of most sessions and is the primary method used with clinicians. Everyone can benefit from Psychotherapy and you do not have to have a diagnosis to see benefits with this method of therapy. Specific types of psychotherapy may be applied based on the needs and goals of the patient.

Play Therapy

Play therapy is the use of evidence based techniques and approaches that promote the development of skills, self- control, self-resilience, and empowerment through the use of play and activity. Through the incorporation of activity and play children are able to communicate conscious or unconscious experiences, desires, thoughts and emotions. The use of play allows for children or adults to safely act out situations and feelings which are disturbing, conflicting and/or confusing through self-chosen toys. Play therapy can be used with children and adults of all ages and is customized in treatment for each individual.

Sand Tray

Sand Tray therapy is an expressive therapy that can be used by all ages. Sand tray therapy provides a venue for clients to create and express their emotions using sand and figures to aid in their healing. Sand tray expression allows those who may not have the vocabulary or strength to articulate their emotions or traumatic experiences verbally.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing or EMDR is an evidence based Psychotherapy treatment that uses bilateral stimulation such as eye movement, tapping, or auditory alternating stimulus to aid in the recovery of trauma and other illnesses and disorders. EMDR allows the reprocessing of negative cognitions to more positive, adaptive patterns of thought and can be used with children and adults for all ages.

CBDT

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is an evidenced based psychosocial intervention used in the treatment of mental health disorders, alcohol and drug addiction, trauma and a wide variety of problems. CBT treatment plans are collaboratively created and customized for the individuals’ needs and goals. In CBT the focus is to guide the client into understanding their thoughts, emotions and behaviors; improve their emotional regulation and build skills to overcome maladaptive thought processes that do not align with the client’s core beliefs.

Family Therapy

Family Therapy involves the participation of a family unit to address unique matters that may be causing dysfunction within a household. Family therapy can aid in the development of stress management skills, communication skills or skills unique to any particular family system that the whole family can use. The focus of family therapy is to enhance family relationships and to guide families and members to a place of understanding and empathy. Clinicians focus on the needs and goals of the family unit while working to improve parent child relationships, developing parenting skills and strengthening family bonds.

Psychological Evaluation

A Psychological Evaluation consist of a series of screenings that assist in the understanding of a child's mental health, development and cognition. The process consists of  an intake interview with caregivers, followed by two visits for the administration of test and evaluation; Thereafter, evaluations are scored and a written report of results is provided.

ADHD - Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

ADHD is a neurological processing disorder which typically presents itself during childhood but can also present itself in adults. The disorder involves attention irregularities, individuals may experience hyperactive behavior and attention coupled with inattentiveness. Texas Tech provides an assessment to evaluate whether you meet the criteria for diagnosis.

Assessments are done on site using a computer based self-questionnaire that takes approximately 60 min. Children and teens would be asked to take the exam independently while a proctor facilitates a pretest. A pretest prior to beginning the exam will be completed with a staff member to ensure the primary test is completed successfully. All participants are left alone to complete the exam in order to minimize distractions and maintain the integrity of the exam.

Parents are expected to wait in the waiting room for the duration of the exam. Results for testing arrive same day upon completion of the exam and may be requested during that time.

Once results are received the patient and family may schedule a future appointment about further intervention or treatment for the diagnosis after medical health professional have reviewed the findings.

Testing for ADHD is not covered by providers and cost $250.00, payment is required before testing occurs. Testing may be requested for children or adults above 5 years of age. Please call the office to schedule a computerized test.
