United Healthcare Contract Negotiations
Though we do all we can to avoid interruptions, care can occasionally be affected by normal business activities like insurance contract negotiations. Such an issue has recently arisen for those of our patients covered by a United Healthcare insurance plan. We are still working diligently to resolve this dispute with UHC. Please read below for answers to some frequently asked questions (FAQs).
FAQs
Q: What is happening and why?
The contract between United Healthcare is up for renewal and we have not been able to reach mutually beneficial terms for a new agreement. This is a standard process that occurs with all health insurance companies, and we hope will be resolved as soon as possible.
Q: When did the contract end?
The contract terminated on March 31, 2026; however, Texas Tech Physicians is still actively working with UHC to come to an agreement.
Q: Will Texas Tech Physicians still provide care to UHC members who are out-of-network?
Yes, Texas Tech Physicians will continue to provide care to all patients, including UHC members, even if we are considered out-of-network.
You will continue receiving the same high-quality care on April 1 , whether in or out-of-network. We encourage you to review your benefits to ensure you can continue to seek care at a non-network provider under your benefit plan provisions.
If we are out-of-network with UHC, your out-of-pocket costs may vary. To understand your specific benefits, we encourage you to call UHC customer service at the phone number on the back of your insurance card. In addition, we encourage you to call UHC today to let them know you want to keep Texas Tech Physicians in your network and let your employer or agent know that Texas Tech is your preferred choice for health care.
Q: Is this termination permanent?
This termination will remain in effect until we are able to come to an agreement with UHC. We will continue to post updates to this page as the discussions continue.
Q: I have an appointment scheduled after 4/1, should I cancel it?
If you have an appointment scheduled in the future with a TTUHSC provider and wish to be seen as in-network, we recommend keeping the appointment until 24 hours prior. These negotiations can change quickly, so we may be in-network by the time your appointment occurs.
Q: What is Transition and Continuity of Care?
UHC’s Transition/Continuity of Care Program allows a Member a transition period based on Qualifying Conditions before they are required to transfer from an Out-of-Network provider to an In-Network provider in order to receive in-network benefits under the terms of your plan. UHC Members are instructed to call UHC’s Customer Service within 30 days of the termination to determine whether they qualify for TOC/COC benefits.
Q: How does Transition and Continuity of Care work?
There are specific services in UHC may considered under Continuity of Care. Please reach out to the UHC customer service phone number on the back of your insurance card for information regarding process and to request your COC form.
Q: If I am out of network, can you bill Medicare?
No, Medicare Advantage plans are an alternative to traditional Medicare. When you elect a Medicare Advantage Plan such as United Healthcare, traditional Medicare will no longer pay for your medical services.
Q: What other Medicare Advantage Plans does TTP participate in?
Currently TTP has contractual relationships with the following Medicare Advantage Plans:
- Aetna
- Baylor Scott & White
- Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas
- Humana
- Wellcare by Allwell
